Google denies Gmail is shutting down after viral hoax
The issue of misinformation on social media platforms, particularly X, has drawn significant criticism, with the EU highlighting it as worse than its peers in spreading falsehoods. Despite X's commitment to tackling hate speech while protecting free speech, instances like the hoax about Gmail shutting down underscore the challenges in maintaining accurate information dissemination.
Regarding the hoax itself, it appears to be based on a real email sent by Google in 2023, which notified users about discontinuing access to Gmail's most basic HTML view. While the viral post claimed Gmail's closure, Google has unequivocally rejected these false claims. However, it's worth noting that Google has indeed discontinued various services in recent years, such as Stadia gaming service, YouTube Stories feature, and the closure of old and inactive Gmail accounts. Plans to close Google Podcasts have also been announced, with its functionalities being absorbed by YouTube Music.
This incident highlights the importance of verifying information before spreading it, as well as the ongoing challenges social media platforms face in combating misinformation while balancing free speech.
